Five versions of Distance are available for download from this site.
Version 6.0 is the latest software, and is the recommended version for most
users. It is fully windows-based, featuring a graphical user interface that is easy to learn and use.
It also has a built-in GIS, which can be used for automated survey
design. It contains the new density surface modelling (DSM) and, a mark-recapture distance sampling (MRDS)
analysis engine for the analysis of double-observer line transect surveys (using
DSM and MRDS requires installation of another free software package called R).
Versions 5.0 and 4.1 are previous version of the software - they are still available for
download but we do not recommend their use. They lack the DSM and MRDS engines and
other recent bug fixes.
Version 3.5 also has a graphical user interface, but lacks many of the
features of later versions. Nevertheless, it has lower computer hardware
requirements and so may be the only option for people with very ancient machines.
Version 2.2 is an older, DOS-based program that is driven using a simple command language.
It is still available mainly for historical reasons.
The following table summarizes the hardware and software requirements of the
three versions. Click on the software titles to proceed to the registration and download
pages, and for information about obtaining the software on CD.
